Caroline
has become famous over the years for her work with animals (mainly
horses). She has appeared on several TV shows and is the author
of the best selling book Aromatherapy for Horses. She is the
only aromatherapist in the world that I know of who teaches
a popular aromatherapy course specifically on animal care and
whose successful practice only includes animals. She has become
a specialist in this field which makes this long-awaited book
quite unique.
This book is presented as a workbook. There is a brief introduction
to essential oils and aromatherapy in case the subject is new
to the reader. The chapters are clearly set out with many interesting
charts and the language is both informative and authoritative.
Each of the 38 essential oil profiles includes a chart showing
methods of administration and dosages for various conditions.
There is also a separate reference guide for common ailments
listing the different essential oils and their properties in
relation to the listed ailment.
Some of the methods and results may be hard to believe, but
remember this book is written from years of personal experience.
The book is literally `peppered' with case studies, both small
(a box or paragraph) and large (several pages at the end of
the book are devoted to detailed studies). The hardest thing
for experienced aromatherapists (if they use this book in
practice) will be to allow the animal to both choose the appropriate
essential oil and the method of administration. Most aromatherapists
will choose a particular essential oil (or blend) for a particular
condition based on their experience - but not in this case.
And to further confuse the issue, the animals preference for
particular essential oils will change depending on the progress
of the ailment.
Caroline is very specific on these points and relates several
case studies as examples.
Caroline says "The purpose of this book is to give back
to people the responsibility of helping their animals. Many
of us have become removed from the privilege of understanding
and knowing how to help ourselves and our animals by allowing
others to think and do for us. We must regain that responsibility
and reconsider the importance of natural medicine."
This very unique book is highly recommended and is a must
have for every serious aromatherapist. It is a most enjoyable
read on a little known aspect of
aromatherapy. A copy should also be in every natural therapy
college library.
